The Ghaggar in the monsoon: staying safe

Most of the year the Ghaggar is a wide, dry riverbed. In the monsoon it can rise fast after heavy rain in the hills, even when it is not raining in Panchkula.

Rules that save lives

  • Never drive or walk through a flooded causeway. Water that looks shallow can sweep away a car.
  • Do not park in the riverbed or play in it during the monsoon.
  • Watch for warnings from the district administration and police, and for road closures.
  • Keep children and pets away from the banks after heavy rain.

Before the monsoon

  • Clear drains around your house.
  • Keep a torch, power bank and important documents in a dry bag.
  • Save 112 for emergencies.

After heavy rain

Check before driving to Morni, Pinjore or the hills: landslides and fallen trees can block roads.
